Did you know that Sparkles Family Fun Centers was originally called something different? Completely and utterly different? Take a seat, my friends, and listen to the tale of how Sparkles got its name.
When it came time for Albert Couey to start advertising for his brand new family fun center, he wanted to name it something that would attract patrons young and old. Something exciting and sweet and all around fun. He decided on Lollipops! November 3, 1980 was the decided date to have a grand opening of the Lollipops Disco Roller Rink. Signs were made, the opening was announced, everything seemed A OK. That was until another Atlanta rink, with an equally sweet name of Jellibeans, protested the Lollipops name.
Soon after the Lollipops opening sign went up, some of the Jellibeans customers started asking if Lollipops was an expansion of Jellibeans. As soon as the Jellibeans owner caught wind of the confusion he actually took Couey to court for wanting to use such a similar name. Couey lost out and it was determined that a new name must be chosen and it could not be anything confectionery so it wouldn’t get confused with Jellibeans.
Who knew jellibeans and lollipops could stir up such a mess! Thankfully Couey had some close friends Julie and Glen, who gave him another idea for his skate rink name! They had a cat named Sparky, who was a feline friend to all. They suggested Couey name the skate rink after their cat and with a slight change, Sparkles was born!
And now you know! So the next time you swing by Sparkles Kennesaw for a fun day of skating, think about how different things would be if you were cruising around the Lollipops rink instead!
