Have you made your new year’s resolutions for 2015? Many people wish they could lose weight and become more fit, and most know that exercise is one of the most important keys to shaping up. But there’s one problem: The gym can get pretty boring. Chances are good that you didn’t think exercise was boring when you were a kid, when the things you did for fun just happened to also give you some exercise.
Why not revisit the activities that were fun back then for a great way to get exercise now? Roller skating is an excellent way to get fit and it’s becoming popular with adults once again. When you look for roller skating near you, you will find the same great combination of fun, music and fitness all in one. Here are some of the benefits of roller skating as exercise.
Cardiovascular Benefits and Calorie Burning
Why walk on a boring treadmill when you can glide around our spacious skating rink instead? Roller skating is a great workout for your cardiovascular system, which strengthens your heart and makes it less likely that you will suffer from a heart attack or stroke. Roller skating is also great for burning calories, which will help you lose weight. Depending on how fast you skate, roller skating burns between 350 to 600 calories an hour. Skating at the top end of that range is just as effective of a workout as running, but doesn’t cause as much stress on your joints.
Strength Training
Roller skating builds strength in your lower legs. It’s an effective workout to strengthen and tone the muscles in your thighs, hips, butt and calves. You could work out on a machine to build strength in your legs, but roller skating will give those benefits naturally and be way more fun!
Builds Endurance
Poor endurance is what makes exercise feel uncomfortable and difficult. The advantage of regular exercise is that you won’t feel fatigued as quickly and easily. When you choose roller skating, you can have fun during those early sessions where exercising still feels tiring, and you will build your endurance quickly enough that soon you will have the energy and strength to comfortably do many types of exercise, roller skating included!
